Things to do in Guyana
About Georgetown, Guyana
Georgetown, the capital and chief port of Guyana, is located on the right bank of the Demerara River estuary. Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America and features four distinct geographical regions: the coastal belt, the forest region, the savannah zone, and the sandy zone.

The city was named after the British took control from the Dutch in 1812, deriving its name from Fort St. George, which was originally established at the mouth of the Demerara River as a signal station to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. Known as the "Garden City," Georgetown’s streets are laid out in an almost perfect rectangle—a legacy of Dutch urban planning—giving the city its unique charm and organized structure.
